Biography

John Jarvis is a prominent figure in the field of Operations Research, having joined the faculty of the H. Milton Stewart School of Industrial and Systems Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology in 1968. Over his distinguished career, he served as the School Chair for 12 years (1989-2001) and was the Executive Director of the Logistics Institute-Asia Pacific. His professional interests encompass transportation, distribution, logistics, networks, linear programming, and optimization. He has authored or co-authored hundreds of articles, technical reports, and presentations. His book, 'Linear Programming Network Flows,' published two decades ago, remains a valuable resource used in numerous universities around the world. In addition to his academic accomplishments, Jarvis has had an active consulting career in transportation logistics and co-founded CAPS Logistics, a 150-person software firm that provides logistics solutions for Fortune 500 companies, which was sold to Baan NV in 1998. He has held significant leadership roles, including Past-President of the Institute of Industrial Engineers (IIE) and Past-President of the Operations Research Society of America (ORSA), and served on the Councils and Boards of several prominent professional organizations such as INFORMS and IIE.
