Biography

John Tofik Karam focuses on the connections between Latin America and the Middle East, particularly in the contexts of global cultural and political economies. He has received several accolades for his work, including the Arab American National Museum Book Award and the Brazilian Studies Association's Roberto Reis Book Award. Karam's scholarly interests are deeply rooted in issues of ethnicity and diaspora, supported by his extensive research published in numerous volumes and articles. His notable books include 'Arabesque: Syrian-Lebanese Ethnicity in Neoliberal Brazil' and more recently, 'Manifold Destiny: Arabs at the American Crossroads of Exceptional Rule.' Karam also served as the director of the Lemann Center for Brazilian Studies at the University of Illinois, a position he was appointed to in 2020 after being awarded a Fulbright award for research in Brasília during the 2019-2020 academic year. He has a strong academic foundation with a PhD in Anthropology from Syracuse University. In addition to his research, Karam teaches several courses related to writing and culture in the context of Latin America and the Caribbean.
