Biography

John Katsaras is a Senior Scientist in the Biological Systems and Distinguished R&D Staff at the Neutron Sciences Directorate of Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). He holds a joint faculty appointment as a Professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. His primary research focuses on soft condensed matter physics, with a particular emphasis on the structural determination of biologically relevant systems and the interactions using various scattering techniques, including neutrons, x-rays, and light. Current research interests include the development of spontaneously forming, functionalized unilamellar vesicles aimed at targeted delivery of payloads to the brain and gaining a detailed structural understanding of biofilms, as well as atomic resolution neutron and x-ray holographies. With an educational background that includes a Ph.D. in Physics/Biophysics from the University of Guelph, his contributions to the field have earned him recognition and various awards throughout his career.
