Biography

John Kerr received his Ph.D. in applied economics from the Food Research Institute at Stanford University in 1990. He joined the faculty at Michigan State University in 1999, after having worked with the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT) in Hyderabad, India, and the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) in Washington, DC. His research interests focus on international agricultural development and natural resource management. In particular, he studies the adoption of agricultural technology, natural resource conservation practices, collective action, and property rights related to natural resource management. He has conducted research in India, Mexico, and Egypt, and has explored the interactions between rural poverty and development in these regions. In addition to his research, he serves on the editorial board of the International Journal of the Commons, a peer-reviewed online open-access journal dedicated to the study of managing commons. Current teaching responsibilities include courses on community sustainability and program evaluation.
