John joined the faculty in 1991. Before moving to New Brunswick, he worked in forestry in Indiana, Wisconsin, and Washington State. His specialties include forest mensuration, forest inventory design analysis, and growth yield modeling. John pioneered the application of copulas, a special class of multivariate distributions, to forest inventory, LiDAR analysis, and growth modeling. His current research projects span New Brunswick, Newfoundland, Maine, Florida, Oregon, Malaysia, Taiwan, Indonesia, and India. He is the lead author of the 5th Edition of Forest Mensuration (Wiley-Blackwell, 2017), a widely used book on mensuration in North America. John is currently the Associate Vice President Academic (Partnerships) at UNB and continues to lead an active and growing research lab. He teaches Advanced Mensuration, Research Methods, and Forestry in Atlantic Canada, and coordinates the Nanjing Forest University – UNB 3+1+1 program. Additionally, John serves as UNB’s representative to the Indo-Canadian Shastri Institute and enjoys world travel to forge new partnership opportunities for UNB. He is a member of the editorial board of Forest Ecosystems and enjoys outdoor activities such as hiking, canoeing, and mountain climbing.
