Biography

Professor John Kilner is a Senior Research Investigator at Imperial College London and has made significant contributions to the field of materials science, particularly in energy materials. He has a rich academic background, having served as the head of the Department of Materials from 2000 to 2006 and as the Dean of the Royal School of Mines from 1998 to 2000. In addition, he has been a Professor at the International Institute for Carbon Neutral Energy Research (I2CNER) in Japan. Over his 30-year career, he has published more than 500 papers and holds numerous patents related to fuel cells and gas separation devices. Kilner's research focuses on the study of oxygen diffusion in oxide ceramic materials for applications in fuel cells and sensors, and he is involved in the development of Intermediate Temperature Fuel Cells and Solid Oxide Electrolysers. He has received several prestigious awards, including the IOM3 Platinum Medal for outstanding services to the discipline and the Daiwa Adrian Award for Anglo-Japanese collaboration. In 2024, he will co-organize the 24th International Conference on Solid State Ionics in London. Kilner has been elected as a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering, recognizing his contributions to materials for high-temperature solid oxide cells.
