Trained painter and writer, John Kissick has held numerous academic posts, including Chair of Critical Studies at Penn State University’s School of Visual Arts, and Dean of the Faculty of Art at the Ontario College of Art & Design from 2000 to 2003. He served for nine years as Director of the School of Fine Art and Music at the University of Guelph. Kissick’s exhibition record features numerous solo exhibitions across Canada, the USA, and Germany, and includes significant survey exhibitions in public collections. A mid-career survey entitled 'John Kissick: Nervous Decade', curated by Crystal Mowry, toured Canada from 2010 to 2012, accompanied by a major publication. Kissick is the author of 'Art: Context Criticism' (1992) and served as editor for the Penn State Journal of Contemporary Criticism from 1990 to 1995, contributing numerous catalogue essays and articles to periodicals. His recent essays include “Elephants Room” in Canadian Art Magazine and “Disco Death Switch: Tales of Contemporary Abstraction” in Border Crossings, which was nominated for the National Magazine Awards in 2009 and 2010. John Kissick was elected to the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts in 2005 and is represented by Katzman Kamen Gallery (Toronto), Wilde Gallery (Berlin), Bigue Art Contemporain (Montreal), and Michael Gibson Gallery (London).
