Biography

John Koenig is a Lecturer at the Henry M. Jackson School of International Studies at the University of Washington. He retired in 2015 after over three decades with the U.S. Foreign Service, where he served in various high-level positions. His notable roles include serving as the U.S. Ambassador to Cyprus, where he successfully brokered the agreement to launch a new round of U.N.-sponsored settlement negotiations. Koenig has also held positions as the Political Advisor at NATO Joint Forces Command in Naples, Italy, and as the Deputy Chief of Mission in Berlin, Germany. Additionally, he was the Deputy Permanent Representative to the U.S. Mission to NATO, further demonstrating his extensive experience in international diplomacy and policy. In recognition of his significant contributions in policy leadership roles in Berlin at USNATO, he received the Presidential Distinguished Service Award in 2011.
