Biography

John Kosmatka, professor of composite aerospace structures, holds the Callaway Golf Chair in Structural Mechanics at the University of California, San Diego. He joined UCSD in 1991 after serving as an assistant professor at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. His career includes senior engineer roles at TRW Aerospace Corporation. His work on composite fan blades for NASA has led to enhanced safety and performance in turbine blade design. Kosmatka has also made significant contributions to in-field bridge manufacturing systems for the U.S. Army and has engaged in high-performance design for sports equipment like golf clubs and America's Cup sailboats.
