John Kramlich received his undergraduate degree in Chemical Engineering and graduate degrees in Environmental and Mechanical Engineering, focusing on chemical kinetics occurring in energy transformation processes. After completing his graduate work in 1980, he joined the Energy Environmental Research Corporation (currently a subsidiary of General Electric) in Irvine, California, where he eventually became Vice President of Process Research. During this time, he was involved in basic contract research directed at the development of pollution reduction techniques for large-scale energy systems. He has worked on various consulting projects pertaining to energy systems for power plants, oil refineries, and biomass conversion facilities. Kramlich joined the University of Washington’s Department of Mechanical Engineering in 1991 and has served as the department's Associate Chair for Academics from 2002 to 2025, and as acting department chair in 2015. His current research interests include the development of clean residential cookstoves for the developing world, in conjunction with Professor Jonathan Posner, and work on synthesizing advanced reactive materials related to supercritical fluids and chemical kinetics. Kramlich has been involved in several funded projects that have been significantly supported by the Department of Defense and the Threat Reduction Agency.
