Biography

John Kramlich received his undergraduate degree in Chemical Engineering and his graduate degrees in Environmental and Mechanical Engineering, focusing on chemical kinetics related to energy transformation processes. After completing his graduate work in 1980, he joined the Energy and Environmental Research Corporation, which is currently a subsidiary of General Electric, in Irvine, California, where he eventually became Vice President of Process Research. During this time, he was involved in basic contract research directed at developing pollution reduction techniques for large-scale energy systems and worked on various consulting projects concerning energy systems in power plants, oil refineries, and biomass conversion facilities. Kramlich joined the University of Washington's Department of Mechanical Engineering in 1991 and has served as the department's Associate Chair for Academics from 2002 to 2025 and acted as the department chair in 2015.
