Dr. John Largess

Biography

John Largess is a renowned violist and professor of practice at the Butler School of Music, University of Texas at Austin. He began his musical career at the age of 12 in Boston, where he studied under noted instructors including Michael Zaretsky of the Boston Symphony Orchestra and Michael Tree at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. In 1995, Largess graduated from Yale University and subsequently joined the Colorado String Quartet as an interim violist, during which he toured extensively across the United States and Canada, teaching and performing. He served as the principal violist for the Charleston Symphony Orchestra in South Carolina before joining the Miró Quartet in 1997. His academic background includes a Bachelor’s degree in Classical Archaeology from Yale, with further studies at the Hebrew University in Israel, where he participated in archaeological excavations in Greece, Israel, and Jordan. Outside of his musical endeavors, John has a passion for cooking, specializing in gourmet French pastries and fine desserts.
