John Leavitt teaches linguistic anthropology in the Department of Anthropology at the University of Montreal. He has been working for about thirty years on the languages, oral poetry, and traditional practices of the Uttarakhand region in the Indian Himalayas. He has published a series of chapters and articles on this region and is preparing a monograph on the role of narrative singers in popular religion. His broader interests include the relationships between language, culture, and thought (book Linguistic Relativities: Language Diversity Modern Thought, 2011), the role of poetics in religious experience (edited book Poetry Prophecy, 1997), and comparative mythology, especially between the South Asian and Celtic worlds. His research has been funded by the Fulbright Foundation, the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council, and the Fonds de recherche du Québec.
