Dr. John Looney

Biography

John Looney, MD, MBA, is a child psychiatrist of national stature and a valued contributor to the field for over 30 years. He has held several significant roles at Duke University, including being the Director of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, and was instrumental in the development of research in child psychiatry. As Professor Emeritus, he has served as the Director of the Duke Substance Treatment Program for Youth and the Duke Center for Psychiatry and Law. His board certifications include General Psychiatry, Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Addiction Psychiatry, Forensic Psychiatry, and Administrative Psychiatry. Dr. Looney has received fellowship honors from major psychiatric organizations and has held leadership roles such as President Elect of the Group for the Advancement of Psychiatry. His primary research interest focuses on the mental health of college students, specifically in helping them develop management skills for success in college, as well as addressing alcohol and substance abuse issues among young people in the academic division of child psychiatry in the United States. He was awarded the status of Professor Emeritus in 2015 and was elected President of the Southern Psychiatric Association in 2016. Dr. Looney remains active within the Duke Department, contributing primarily to the Consortium Study of American College Students and providing external consultations in his areas of interest.
