Biography

John Lygeros grew up in Athens, Greece and graduated from Athens College in 1987. He completed a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering in 1990 and a Master’s degree in Systems Control in 1991 at Imperial College of Science Technology and Medicine, London, U.K. He obtained his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences from the University of California, Berkeley in 1996. Between 1996 and 2000, he held several research appointments at the National Automated Highway Systems Consortium, M.I.T. and U.C. Berkeley, while also working part-time as a research engineer at SRI International. He served as a Visiting Professor at the Université de Bretagne Occidentale in France. From July 2000 to March 2003, he was a University Lecturer in the Department of Engineering at the University of Cambridge, U.K. He became an Assistant Professor at the University of Patras in Greece before joining ETH Zurich’s Automatic Control Laboratory as a Professor in Computational Control. His research interests include modeling, analysis, and control of large-scale dynamic systems, with applications in biochemical networks, energy systems, transportation, and advanced manufacturing. He has held various leadership roles in IEEE Control System Society and is currently the Director of the National Centre of Competence in Research 'Dependable Ubiquitous Automation.'
