Biography

John Paul MacDuffie is a Professor of Management at the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania and the director of the Program on Vehicle and Mobility Innovation (PVMI) within Wharton’s Mack Institute for Innovation Management. His academic work focuses on human resource management systems, the challenges of managing distance among employees, and organizational learning and collaboration. MacDuffie co-directed the International Motor Vehicle Program (IMVP) from 2001 to 2012, a research network founded by MIT to address issues facing the global automotive industry. He received his BA from Harvard and his PhD from the MIT Sloan School of Management. His research areas include the diffusion of lean and flexible production methods as alternatives to mass production, the impact of human resource systems on work organization and economic performance, and collaborative problem-solving within firms. He is a founding board member of the Industry Studies Association and a member of the Automotive Experts Group at the Federal Reserve Bank.
