Biography

John Magliaro is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Mechanical and Mechatronics Engineering at the University of Waterloo. He completed his PhD in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Windsor in 2021, during which he was awarded NSERC CGS-M/D and OGS competitive scholarships. His dissertation research focused on analytical, numerical, and experimental investigations of a novel class of lightweight sacrificial energy absorbers that actively modify and adapt geometries to improve occupant safety. His research interests include engineering design, experimental testing, and modeling of lightweight structures, structural crashworthiness, and wear resistance applications. Current research projects primarily investigate lightweight metallics, particularly aluminum and magnesium alloys, analyzing their deformation, damage mechanisms, and energy absorbing potential in cellular plastics and thermoplastics. John has developed and delivered eight university courses at both undergraduate and graduate levels, covering topics such as dynamics, thermofluids, mechanics of materials, and finite element analysis. He has also developed collaborative projects with industrial partners aimed at addressing practical engineering challenges in transportation and manufacturing sectors.
