John Magorrian is an Associate Professor of Theoretical Astrophysics at the University of Oxford. He specializes in the research themes of galaxy formation and evolution, with a strong emphasis on stellar dynamics and the interstellar medium. His research focuses on understanding the structure and evolution of galaxies, drawing upon methods from classical mechanics, statistical physics, and plasma physics. One of the most rewarding aspects of his work is the opportunity to test theoretical galaxy models against observations, which poses challenging inference problems. In addition to his research, Dr. Magorrian lectures on Vectors & Matrices for first-year students and teaches a fourth-year MMathPhys course on galactic planetary dynamics. He is also a fellow at Jesus College, where he tutors undergraduate students in mathematics, quantum mechanics, and fluid dynamics.
