Biography

Dr. Mai’s academic professional engineering career defines multi-disciplinary, multi-institute collaborations that apply basic research results to solve high-value problems. He aims to share experiences in teaching and mentoring students to become future leaders and innovators in biomedical engineering. Before joining the BME department in 2024, Dr. Mai was the senior director of engineering at the Alfred E. Mann Institute for Biomedical Engineering at USC, working on commercializing hyperspectral imaging hardware and software developed by researchers at the Translational Imaging Center, USC, and in venture-funded companies. He collaborated with Nokia Bell Labs to integrate optical coherence tomography 'on-a-chip' for medical imaging commercialization. His previous role was as a Principal Engineer at the Sensors Applications Lab, Huawei Technologies, where he was responsible for developing biosensors for smart phone and wearable applications. He has initiated collaborations with major European institutes, including CEA/LETI and IMEC. Industry experience includes serving as Deputy Chief Operating Officer at Vialogy and developing sensor interoperability middleware, recognized by Frost & Sullivan with a North American Product Innovation Award. He has held academic positions as a Visiting Assistant Professor at the City University of Hong Kong and Special Researcher at the Industrial Technology Research Institute in Taiwan. Dr. Mai’s research areas include micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS), bio-MEMS, and MOEMs, focusing on microfluidic platforms for lab-on-a-chip applications.
