Biography

John F. Manning is the Dane Professor of Law at Harvard Law School and currently serves as the University Provost. He joined the Harvard Law School faculty in 2004 and has held significant roles including Bruce Bromley Professor of Law from 2007 to 2017 and Deputy Dean from 2013 to 2017. Manning began his academic career in 1994 at Columbia Law School as the Michael Sovern Professor of Law. His teaching interests include administrative law, federal courts, legislation regulation, separation of powers, and statutory interpretation. His scholarly writing focuses on statutory interpretation and structural constitutional law. Manning has co-edited notable works such as Hart & Wechsler’s Federal Courts Federal System and Legislation Regulation. Before his academic pursuits, he worked in various legal roles including assistant Solicitor General at the U.S. Department of Justice and as an attorney-advisor in the Office of Legal Counsel, U.S. Department of Justice. He also clerked for Hon. Antonin Scalia on the Supreme Court of the United States and Hon. Robert H. Bork on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit. Manning graduated from Harvard Law School in 1985 and Harvard College in 1982, and he is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
