Biography

John Marshall joined the Department of Study of Religion in 2000. His graduate study at Princeton University focused on religions of late antiquity, generating an abiding interest in the religious boundary crossing within the ancient world. Professor Marshall is cross-appointed to the Centre for Jewish Studies and the Department of Classics. His current academic interests include apocalyptic literature, colonialism, religion in the ancient world, Early Jewish-Christian relations, the historical Jesus, 'magic', and the role of Paul in the construction of Christianity. His research takes into account ancient literary sources to address social-historical questions about the history of Temple Judaism and the development of early Christianity.
