Biography

John Marshall is a tenured Professor of Art and Design and an Architecture Professor (without tenure) at the University of Michigan, where he serves as the founding director of the Master of Design (MDes) Integrative Design program from 2014 to 2020. With 20 years of experience as a designer, curator, and researcher, John co-founded the design practice rootoftwo in 1998, utilizing participatory design methods to craft innovative experiences. His collaborative works have garnered attention from clients such as Midtown Detroit Inc. and the Kresge Foundation. His projects have been recognized with awards including the AIA Michigan Honor Award in 2016 and he has been featured in prominent publications such as Wired and FastCompany. Previously, he has worked with industry leaders on product development and taught 3D design at Leeds College of Art & Design. John earned his PhD in Digital Design Fabrication Technology from Robert Gordon University and holds multiple degrees in Fine Arts and Art as Environment from reputed universities.
