Biography

John Mathews was appointed Professor Emeritus at Macquarie University in 2019, having served for decades as Professor of Strategic Management at Macquarie’s Graduate School of Management, now part of Macquarie Business School. He was concurrently a Professor of Competitive Dynamics in Global Strategy at LUISS Guido Carli University in Rome from 2009 to 2012. He won the prestigious Schumpeter Prize in 2018 and was the co-winner with Professor Michael for the ‘Best Paper’ award in the Review of Evolutionary Political Economy for the paper ‘Gone with the Wind: state power and industrial policy in the offshore wind power sector’, co-authored with Elizabeth Thurbon, Sung-Young Kim, and Hao Tan. Mathews has published significant works in the area of strategic management, including five books that analyze the greening of global industry and the intersection of capitalism with environmental sustainability. Key titles include 'Greening Capitalism: Asia Driving The Great Transformation' (Stanford University Press, 2014) and 'Developmental Environmentalism: State Ambition and Creative Destruction in East Asia’s Green Energy Transition' (Oxford University Press, 2023, with Thurbon and Kim Tan). He is also co-editor of the forthcoming 'Oxford Handbook on Greening Economic Development', set to publish in 2024/25.
