Biography

John Mattick is a prominent researcher in the field of RNA biology, currently holding the position of SHARP Professor of RNA Biology at the University of New South Wales (UNSW), Sydney. His academic journey began with a Bachelor of Science with First Class Honours in Biochemistry from the University of Sydney, followed by a PhD in Biochemistry from Monash University in 1978. Mattick has had a distinguished career, serving as the Executive Director of Genomics England and as the Director of the Garvan Institute of Medical Research. He is well-known for establishing the HiSeq X10 sequencing facilities for genome analysis. His work has yielded over 300 published articles and a remarkable citation record. Mattick's research focuses on the regulatory roles of non-coding RNAs in the evolution and development of complex organisms, challenging previous understandings of the human genome, considered mostly 'junk'. His pioneering studies revealed the extensive architectural and regulatory features embodied in non-coding RNA, impacting areas such as epigenetics and gene expression.
