Biography

John Maxwell is an Associate Professor in the Publishing program at Simon Fraser University, where he has been teaching since 2001. His research interests lie in the impacts of technological change on book and periodical publishing, exploring the history of publishing, and the emergence of digital forms and genres. Maxwell has a deep background in web technologies, having worked since 1993 in the areas of content management strategies, electronic publishing, and learning technologies. He earned his PhD in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of British Columbia, with research focused on the cultural history of personal educational computing at Xerox PARC in the 1970s. He has served as the Director of the Publishing program from 2014 to 2023, and continues to engage in teaching both undergraduate and graduate students in topics including Digital Publishing Workshop and publications related to self and everyday life. His recent research investigates the evolution of scholarly communications and open scholarship, including the digitization of the 16th-century Aldine Collection at SFU Library.
