Biography

Professor of Molecular Dermatology and head of the Genetic Skin Disease Group at St John's Institute of Dermatology, John McGrath is also an honorary Consultant Dermatologist at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust. He graduated from Guy’s Hospital in 1985 and trained in dermatology and dermatopathology at the St John's Institute of Dermatology in London. His research background includes electron microscopy and molecular biology. He has served as the President of the European Society of Dermatological Research and is currently an editorial board member for nine international journals, including as a section editor for genetics in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology. His contributions to dermatological research include numerous peer-reviewed articles, particularly focusing on gene therapies and the intersection of genetics with skin diseases. He has played a pivotal role in advancing the understanding of conditions such as epidermolysis bullosa through a variety of innovative research outputs, and his recent work includes the licensing of a novel therapy for treating complex skin disorders. His leadership in both clinical and academic settings continues to shape the future of dermatology and patient care.
