Professor McKernan is a fellow of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA). He completed professional training at Ernst & Whinney CA (now Ernst & Young), spending ten years working in the profession in Scotland, primarily involved in the provision of audit and business advisory services to local companies. He is a member of a research cluster and has expertise in financial reporting, social accounting, and accountability, with interdisciplinary perspectives on accounting.
