Biography

John McPhee is a Professor in the Department of Systems Design Engineering at the University of Waterloo, where he holds the Canada Research Chair in System Dynamics. He has an extensive academic background with degrees from Acadia University, the Technical University of Nova Scotia, and the University of Waterloo. Beginning his faculty career in 1992, he has significantly contributed to the field of system dynamics, particularly in the areas of biomechatronics and multidisciplinary physical systems. McPhee has published over 177 journal papers and 309 conference papers, demonstrating his influence and expertise in the field. His work has garnered numerous awards, including the NSERC Synergy Award for Innovation and the Engineering Excellence Medal from the Professional Engineers Ontario. He has also been recognized among the top 2% of scientists worldwide by Stanford University in 2022. His research interests span biomechatronics, multibody dynamic models, rehabilitation robots, and more. He has served in various leadership capacities including Vice-Chair of the International Association for Multibody System Dynamics and as an associate editor for several leading journals. John has also supervised 116 graduate students and postdoctoral fellows, contributing to the academic development of future leaders in engineering.
