Biography

John joined King’s College London in September 2019 as a Senior Lecturer in European International Studies. He previously held a lectureship in Sociology at Birmingham City University and was a Leverhulme Early Career Fellow in the Department of Sociology at the University of Warwick. John received his PhD from the University of Nottingham. His interdisciplinary research interests include racial capitalism, race, racism, anti-racism, globalization, democracy, imperialism, and anti-imperialism. His recent research focuses on the understudied transnationalism of the Black Power political theory, particularly in connection with groups like the Black Panther Party. He aims to retrieve the history and significance of Black Power within global politics and its lessons for anti-racist democratic politics in an age marked by resurgent nativism in Europe and the USA. John's work has been published in academic journals such as World Quarterly, Theory, Culture & Society, Current Sociology, and Sociological Review. He is currently completing a monograph based on the findings of his research, and he also welcomes doctoral applications related to his research interests.
