Biography

John Neville-Andrews has over 45 years of professional experience in acting, directing, and producing. He has taught at institutions such as Penn State University, Yale School of Drama, University of Maryland, University of Rhode Island, and California Institute of the Arts. As an artistic producer at the Shakespeare Theatre in Washington, D.C., Neville-Andrews garnered critical acclaim for his productions of Shakespeare classics. He co-authored and starred in the enigmatic comedy 'El Grande de Coca-Cola,' which won a Drama Desk Award in 1972, and was involved in the parody 'Bullshot Crummond' based on H.C. McNeile’s 'Bulldog Drummond' books, leading to a film produced by George Harrison’s Handmade Films. His credits as an actor and director include numerous productions at prominent regional theaters throughout the country, such as the Utah Shakespeare Festival, American Players Theatre, Yale Repertory Theatre, Williamstown Theatre Festival, Olney Theatre Center, and Texas Shakespeare Festival. On Broadway, he acted in 'The Elephant Man' (Tony Award) and off-Broadway in 'Homecoming.' He has also successfully directed national tours in the U.S. and Germany, including a 90-minute adaptation of Gershwin’s 'Crazy for You' for the Gershwin Estate. His distinguished tenure as artistic producer at the Michigan Shakespeare Festival has presented innovative productions of Shakespeare, and he was instrumental in the Festival being selected as 'The Official Shakespeare Festival of the State of Michigan.' His awards include the Smithsonian Institute’s Certificate of Excellence for 'Playaround Shakespeare' in 1987, the 1983 American Theatre Association Award for 'Contribution to Theatre,' and the 2012 Claribel Baird Halstead Collegiate Professorship at the School of Music, Theatre & Dance.
