Biography

Professor of English at the University of Waterloo, John North is educated at the University of British Columbia and the University of Alberta. His literary interests include Victorian Studies, Shakespeare, Literature and the Bible, and Children’s Literature. His primary research focuses on nineteenth-century British newspapers and periodicals, and bibliography. North is a founding member of the Pascal Lectures on Christianity at the University of Waterloo. He has recently conducted graduate seminars on the works of Alfred Tennyson, Robert Browning, Gerard Manley Hopkins, Charles Dickens, John Ruskin, J.S. Mill, J.H. Newman, and the Bronte sisters, as well as Canadian poetry through the lens of Margaret Avison. He is recognized for his significant contributions to the fields of Victorian Literature and literary history, including the publication of the Waterloo Directory series, which documents historical newspaper and periodical literature from the 19th century. This series has been acknowledged as one of the major feats in humanities scholarship and has been honored with a Distinguished Achievement Award by SHARP. His work continues to explore the identification and analysis of the vast corpus of historical documents that shed light on the history of civilization during the 19th century, while also supervising graduate students in various areas related to his research.
