Biography

John Oommen is a Chancellor’s Professor Emeritus at the School of Computer Science at Carleton University. He received his Bachelor of Technology in Electrical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology in Madras, India in 1975, followed by a Master of Engineering from the Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore, India in 1977. He obtained his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Purdue University, Indiana, USA in 1982. Oommen's research interests include Stochastic Learning, Pattern Recognition, and Artificial Intelligence, with over 40 years devoted to these fields. He played a significant role in developing Learning Automata and was recognized as a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) in 2003 for his contributions to artificial intelligence. He was also nominated as a Fellow of the International Association for Pattern Recognition (IAPR) in 2006. In addition to teaching, he has served on editorial boards of numerous journals and has published award-winning papers. He has earned Carleton University’s Research Achievement Award multiple times, indicating his significant impact in the field of computer science.
