John Pascal holds a PhD in Biochemistry from the University of Texas. After completing postdoctoral training at Harvard University, he was recruited as a professor at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia in the Department of Biochemistry. He joined the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Medicine at the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Montreal in June 2015 as an Associate Professor. Pascal studies the structure and function of cellular macromolecular complexes. He is particularly interested in DNA repair mechanisms, especially the family of Poly(ADP-ribose) polymerases (PARPs). His research group investigates the structure and function of proteins to understand the molecular details of macromolecules involved in fundamental cellular processes. A key goal is to determine the three-dimensional structure of proteins to understand how their architecture relates to their cellular function. The group employs X-ray crystallography as a primary tool for protein and protein-DNA complex structure determination, alongside various biophysical, biochemical, and cellular assay tools to achieve a better understanding of the cellular function of proteins of interest.
