Biography

John Pearson received his DPhil in Numerical Analysis from the University of Oxford and moved to the University of Edinburgh in 2013 to take the Whittaker Research Fellowship at the School of Mathematics. He worked as a lecturer in Mathematics at the University of Kent from 2015 to 2017, where he was awarded an EPSRC Fellowship. His main research interests focus on modeling and numerics for optimal control processes, particularly in practical industrial applications. He has significant experience in the numerical solution of partial differential equations (PDEs) related to fluid dynamics and chemical processes, and he takes a keen interest in developing computational optimization and related software for real-world mathematical problems. His contributions to the field have been recognized with the IMA Leslie Fox Prize in Numerical Analysis in 2015 and the University of Kent Faculty of Sciences Research Award in 2016. He is actively involved in professional activities, including his previous role as an EPSRC Fellow, and is a Fellow of the Alan Turing Institute and the Higher Education Academy.
