Professor Dr. John Peterson

Biography

John Peterson is a prominent Australian composer, known for his contributions to contemporary music. He holds a Bachelor of Music with First Class Honours, a Master of Music, and a PhD in Composition from the University of Sydney. His works have been performed by major Australian orchestras including the Ku-ring-gai Philharmonic Orchestra and the Queensland Philharmonic Orchestra. Peterson has composed for various media and ensembles, receiving acclaim for pieces such as 'Rituals Transfigured Time,' which was recorded by the BBC National Orchestra of Wales. He has been a semi-finalist in the Masterprize international competition and was awarded the prestigious Albert H. Maggs Composition Award in 2005. His significant choral works include 'Shadows Light' and 'Mourning Light,' while chamber works feature 'Fabulous Beasts' and collaborations with choreographers. Also an educator, Peterson teaches music composition, film music, and theory at UNSW.
