Biography

Professor Preston joined the University of Southampton in 2006, having previously held academic positions at the University of Leeds and the University of Oxford. With over 40 years of experience in transport research and education, he has taught various courses related to transport options, economics, engineering, geography, and management planning. His research primarily focuses on demand cost modelling, regulatory studies, and land-use environment interactions, along with economic appraisal and evaluation. Initially concentrating on rail transport, his later work has encompassed major transport modes, successfully securing 160 research grants and contracts worth £22 million. He has published nearly 400 academic articles, book chapters, and conference papers and has supervised 30 doctoral students to completion. He is an elected Fellow of the Transport Research Foundation and the Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation.
