Biography

John Price is a Social Cultural Historian who takes a ‘People’s History’ approach to the nineteenth and twentieth-century British history, local history, and the history of London. He completed his PhD at King’s College London in 2010 and spent fourteen years in the Department of History at Goldsmiths, University of London, serving as Head of Department from 2017 to 2020. His research interests include Public Community History, Constructions of Heroism, Heroic Schooling, Education, Urban History, the Histories of London, and Material Culture. John has developed numerous undergraduate and postgraduate programmes and has extensive experience in teaching and educational development. He is engaged in public history and community engagement, having undertaken high-profile projects that significantly increased public knowledge of key historical events. He is the Director of the Museum of Everyday Life and was the Academic Lead for Living Memory, celebrating diversity in heritage in the London Borough of Lewisham in 2022. John conceived the award-winning 'Windrush: Arrival 1948' project in collaboration with Cenci, based on the transcription of the Windrush passenger list. His selected publications include 'Heroes of Postman's Park: Heroic Self-Sacrifice in Victorian London' and 'Everyday Heroism: Victorian Constructions of Heroic Civilian.'
