Biography

John D. Rioux is a full professor of medicine at the Université de Montréal and at the Montreal Heart Institute where he serves as a researcher and director of the Laboratory of Genetics and Genomic Medicine in Inflammation. Since 2005, he has held the Canada Research Chair in Genetics and Genomic Medicine. Dr. Rioux obtained a Bachelor of Science in Immunology in 1987 and a Ph.D. in Experimental Medicine from McGill University in 1994. He completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the Whitehead Institute/MIT Center for Genome Research in 1997. Following this training, Dr. Rioux established a research group focusing on the genetics and genomics of monogenic and polygenic complex diseases. In 2001, he became the director of the inflammatory diseases research group at the Whitehead Institute/MIT Center for Genome Research, and then at the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard. His research aims to discover genetic risk factors for common (polygenic) diseases and to determine the biological mechanisms by which these genetic variants influence the risk of developing chronic diseases. He is a founding member of four international consortia in genetics and has published over 150 articles, including several in prestigious journals such as Nature, Science, and the New England Journal of Medicine.
