Biography

John Rubinstein is a Professor in the Department of Biochemistry at the University of Toronto. He obtained his B.Sc from the University of Guelph in 1998 and received his PhD from Cambridge University in 2002. He worked at the Medical Research Council laboratories under the supervision of Sir John E. Walker and Dr. Richard Henderson. Dr. Rubinstein has held a postdoctoral position at the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology before returning to Canada with a National Cancer Institute of Canada postdoctoral fellowship at the Banting Department of Medical Research. In 2006, he joined the Research Institute of The Hospital for Sick Children and has since focused on electron cryomicroscopy and the study of macromolecular machines. His research group examines the structure and function of macromolecular assemblies using cryo-EM methods, exploring the dynamics of membrane protein complexes and their relevance to neurological disorders and cancer. He has received numerous distinctions, including being elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada in 2024 and holding a Canada Research Chair in Electron Cryomicroscopy.
