Professor Savage earned his PhD in Electrical Engineering from MIT in 1965, specializing in coding and information theory. He joined Bell Laboratories in 1965 and has been a faculty member at the Division of Engineering at Brown University since 1967. In 1979, he co-founded the Department of Computer Science and served as its second chair from 1985 to 1991. His research interests include coding and communication theory, theoretical computer science, VLSI theory and practice, computational nanotechnology, and cybersecurity. He is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) and the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), as well as a Life Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). He has published over 100 research articles and has given more than 185 invited research presentations worldwide. Savage has held various positions related to departmental, faculty, and university affairs, including Chair of the Nominations Committee and Chair of the Faculty Governance Task Force. His recent assignments also include Chair of the Search Committee for the Vice President of Public Affairs and University Relations. He received the President's Award for Excellence in Faculty Governance.
