Biography

John Schermer specializes in crystal growth and gas phase subsequent device processing. He is responsible for the acquisition and management of research projects, guiding PhD students, and lecturing courses on materials science, wave optics, and sustainable energy. His research group focuses on III-V semiconductor technology development for high-efficiency thin-film solar cells and applications in spacecraft light concentrator systems. John has acquired and executed more than 35 national and international research projects, resulting in state-of-the-art research laboratories and clean rooms, as well as in- and outdoor photovoltaic calibration facilities. His research group has achieved multiple solar cells recognized for world record efficiencies and has been involved with four start-up companies where he acts as an independent unpaid scientific advisor. He has established long-term collaborations with industrial partners and research institutes such as Airbus, LG Electronics, TNO, Solliance, Circadian Solar, Umicore, SunCycle, and Frauenhofer-ISE.
