Professor John Sedivy joined the Brown Faculty in 1996 and is a member of the Department of Molecular Biology, Cell Biology and Biochemistry. He obtained his PhD from Harvard in 1985 and trained with Nobel Laureate Philip Sharp at the MIT Center for Cancer Research. Sedivy started his independent research career at Yale University in 1988, where he focused on cell cycle regulation and signal transduction, initially studying the Myc oncogene and later implicating it in cellular aging through replicative senescence. His lab is continuously funded by the National Institutes of Health since 1989, and by 2003, he became interested in genomics, leading to work on Myc-regulated gene networks and involvement in bioinformatics and systems biology. In 2004, Sedivy's lab began developing single-cell assays for cellular senescence, working on robust biomarkers of telomere-initiated senescence. He has published over 140 original articles and served on numerous advisory committees for the NIH and other organizations. His research currently investigates epigenetic regulation of cellular senescence and the role of c-Myc in aging.
