Biography

John Severn received his PhD from the University of New South Wales with a thesis titled "Shakespeare Jukebox Musical". He also holds an MA with Distinction in Shakespeare Theatre from the Shakespeare Institute, University of Birmingham, as well as first-class honours degrees in Theatre Studies and Opera Studies from Manchester University and Rose Bruford College. Before entering academia, he worked as a solicitor in private practice and has professional translation experience. Severn is an Associate of the Chartered Institute of Linguists. His research primarily focuses on theatre internationalization, exploring how musical and operatic adaptations of Shakespeare engage with local, national, and international communities. He has published a monograph entitled "Shakespeare Jukebox Musical" (Routledge, 2018) and is currently co-editing the "Routledge Companion to Theatre Internationalization". He has been involved in various research projects and has contributed to conferences and workshops centered on theatre and cultural studies. Severn has taught a diverse range of subjects including Shakespeare, French studies, and global cultures at Macquarie University and other institutions.
