John Sexton served as the president of New York University from 2001 to 2015 and is the Benjamin F. Butler Professor of Law at the NYU School of Law, where he also served as dean from 1988 to 2002. Under his leadership, the Law School's reach and stature grew significantly, coinciding with NYU's emergence as a global network university. The institution expanded to include campuses in Abu Dhabi and Shanghai and established 12 academic centers worldwide. Sexton is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and holds 24 honorary degrees. Before joining NYU, Sexton clerked for Judges Harold Leventhal and David Bazelon of the D.C. Circuit, and Chief Justice Warren Burger.
