Dr. John Shepherd

Biography

John Shepherd is a Distinguished Research Professor at Carleton University, specializing in music sociology, aesthetics, popular music studies, methodology in musicology, and cultural studies. His academic journey began with a B.A. and B.Mus. from Carleton, followed by a D.Phil. from York University in the U.K. and further qualifications from the Royal College of Music. Shepherd has lectured extensively across North America, Europe, Australia, and South America, contributing significantly to scholarly discourse on music's role in society. In 1995, he was appointed Principal Editor of the 'Bloomsbury Encyclopedia of Popular Music of the World' and has published several influential works, including 'Whose Music? Sociology of Musical Languages' and 'Rock Popular Music: Politics, Policies, Institutions.' His research has garnered numerous accolades, including recognition by Carleton University in 1992 with the Davidson Dunton Research Lectureship and being elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada in 2000 for his contributions to critical musicology. From 2007 to 2012, he served as Carleton's Dean of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs, later becoming Vice-Provost and Associate Vice-President (Academic) from 2012 to 2017.
