John L. Sherry teaches a variety of courses on the effects of mass media at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. He also teaches graduate courses on complex systems, media theory, and educational media. His current research focuses on the intersection of video games, education, and communication within complex dynamic systems. His research in educational gaming examines the cognitive processes that facilitate learning through gameplay, exploring how these processes may differ across gender, personality, and cognitive skills. His goal is to create barrier-free educational video games that complement formal education curricula. In addition, he spends time developing a new paradigm for studying communication as a dynamic system, employing modeling, experimentation, and simulation methodologies. He is affiliated with the MSU Cognitive Science Program, is a member of the Purdue University Graduate faculty, and is also an affiliate of the MSU Games Entertainment Learning Lab. Additionally, he has served as the Associate Editor for Communication Theory and was a co-founder and past Chair of the Video Game Special Interest Group of the International Communication Association.
