Biography

Dr. John Shi is a Senior Lecturer in hydrology and climate at the University of Glasgow. He earned his PhD from the University of Washington and was awarded the NSERC VF Postdoctoral Fellowship, working at the National Hydrology Research Centre in Canada. Dr. Shi joined the University of Glasgow in 2018 after serving as a Lecturer at Lancaster University and Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University, and as a Research Scientist at CSIRO in Australia. He is the Director of Research in the School of Social and Environmental Sustainability and the Programme Director for the MSc in Environmental Science at the University of Glasgow-Nankai University Joint Graduate School. He leads the Environmental Sustainability IRT leadership team within the College of Social Sciences and was appointed in 2020 to the Technical Reference Group of the Permanent Okavango River Water Commission in Africa. In 2023, he became an Adjunct Professor at York University in Canada. Dr. Shi is also an Associate Editor for the Environmental Impact Assessment Review. His research interests include understanding changes in the terrestrial water cycle due to global change influenced by natural and human-induced forces, focusing on climate extremes, hydrological modeling, big-data machine learning, and water resource management using remote sensing data.
