Dr. John Shoven

Biography

John Shoven is the Charles Schwab Professor of Economics Emeritus at Stanford University and a Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution. He has a robust career as a research associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research and specializes in public finance and corporate finance. His research has significantly contributed to the fields of Social Security, health economics, corporate and personal taxation, mutual funds, pension plans, and economic demography, employing applied general equilibrium economics. Shoven is the author of several influential books, including 'Real Deal: History Future Social Security' and 'Evolving Pension System,' and has co-authored works with prominent figures such as former Secretary of State Treasury George Shultz on important topics like Social Security and healthcare reform in the U.S. His extensive publication record includes more than a hundred professional articles and twenty books, with contributions to esteemed journals such as the American Economic Review and the Journal of Public Economics. Shoven has been recognized for his academic achievements through fellowships in the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and has received the Paul Samuelson Award for Outstanding Scholarly Writing. He earned his Ph.D. in Economics from Yale University in 1973 and has been associated with Stanford since then, serving as the Dean of Humanities and Sciences from 1993 to 1998.
