Biography

Professor Soluri's research and teaching explore the relationship between social and environmental change in Latin America. His upcoming book, 'Creatures of Fashion: Animals, Global Markets, Transformation in Patagonia' (Spring 2024), examines the commodification of wild and domesticated animals in the textiles industry in Patagonia. His new research projects include 'Coffee Break,' which promotes disruptive thinking around 'good coffee' by engaging coffee drinkers in conversations with farmers, roasters, and baristas to reimagine hospitality rooted in sustainability and social justice. He is also researching the histories of petroleum extraction and agricultural diversity in Latin American cuisine. His notable publications include a work on export banana production and consumption, an award-winning book titled 'Banana Cultures,' and several articles on environmental histories and agricultural practices in Latin America. Currently, he is supervising graduate students researching quinoa agrodiversity in highland Peru and is interested in the Mexican Revolution's transnational influences on land struggles across the Americas.
