Professor Dr. John Spiesberger

Biography

John Spiesberger is a Visiting Scholar at the University of Pennsylvania, specializing in Earth Environmental Sciences. He has a Ph.D. in Oceanography from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography and a Bachelor’s degree in Physics from the University of California, Berkeley. His research focuses on estimating the abundance of calling animals in the air and ocean, localizing these animals using widely separated receivers, and understanding sound propagation in marine environments. He has worked at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and the Pennsylvania State University’s Department of Meteorology and Applied Research Laboratory, where he developed significant expertise in oceanography, wave propagation, and signal processing. His contributions to the field are informed by extensive experience in marine mammal studies and acoustic monitoring.
